Melasti Beach, Uluwatu: A Guide to Ungasan’s Cliff-Road Beach

White sand at the foot of a road cut through the limestone, with a reef to calm the waves.

Overview

Melasti Beach, before you go.

Melasti Beach is a long white-sand beach under the limestone cliffs of Ungasan, on the Bukit Peninsula’s south coast, 20 to 30 minutes east of Uluwatu Temple. A road cut through the cliff takes you almost onto the sand, and a reef offshore calms the water. It suits families, swimmers and beach-club days more than anyone looking for an empty cove.

Melasti Beach takes its name from Melasti, the purification ceremony Balinese Hindus hold at the sea before Nyepi, the Day of Silence. For the people of Ungasan this was the place they carried their temple effigies down to the water, beside the small Pura Segara on the shore. Getting there was hard, because the village sits on a limestone plateau that ends in sheer cliffs. From 1993 to 2007 the village cut a road through the rock down to the sand, so that ceremonies could reach the temple, and that road is what made the beach famous.

The customary village of Ungasan still runs the beach through its own business unit, collecting the entry fee at the top of the hill. In 2022 it was already drawing about 40,000 visits a month, and the white walls of the cutting became a favorite photo backdrop. The water explains the rest. Shallow coral about 100 meters offshore breaks most of the swell, so inside the reef the sea is clear, turquoise and calm enough for swimming between the flags.

Development followed fast. In 2023 Bali police named five suspects over the unpermitted filling of about 2.2 hectares of shoreline and cliff, work that began in 2018 for a planned beach club. In August 2025 Badung’s public works office named eight businesses at Melasti, Tropical Temptation, Mino, Magus Warung, Uma, Palmilla, White Rock, Karma and Klive, as breaking the new coastal zoning, and sent warning letters. Unlike at Bingin, where cliff warungs were demolished, the regent chose to study each case and work in stages. By October 2026 no demolition at Melasti had been reported, and the clubs were open; White Rock hosted the Coinfest Asia conference in August 2026.

So expect a busy, built-up beach rather than a wild one. Tour buses arrive at weekends, the sand in front of the clubs is lined with daybeds, and a second access road is still a construction site. There is little natural shade. The beach faces south, so the sun sets behind the headland to the west rather than into the sea; you get colored skies, not a sinking sun.

Still, few beaches on the Bukit combine easy access, a long walk on white sand and water this calm. Go on a weekday morning, swim inside the reef, and leave the clubs for the afternoon.

What to See

What to see at Melasti Beach.

  1. 01

    The road through the cliff

The main road curls down between walls of white limestone that took the village 14 years to cut, ending at a car park a few steps from the sand. Stop at the top bend for the classic view down the cutting to the sea, and again near the bottom where the walls tower above you. Early morning light is softest and the road is nearly empty.

  2. 02

    Swimming inside the reef

The reef about 100 meters out breaks the waves early, so they reach the sandy shore small and gentle. Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags, where lifeguards watch during daylight. Currents get stronger beyond the reef and near the cliffs at either end, and on big-swell days in the wet season it is better to stay in waist-deep water.

  3. 03

    Rock pools at low tide

When the tide drops, the shallows turn into still lagoons that feel like a natural pool, and rock pools open along the edges of the reef. It is the best time for small children and for looking at crabs and small fish. Wear reef shoes, watch for sea urchins, and get off the rocks as soon as the water starts rising.

  4. 04

    The beach clubs

Tropical Temptation and White Rock sit on the sand with pools and daybeds; neither charges entry, but daybeds carry minimum spends from about IDR 800,000 at Tropical Temptation and IDR 1,000,000 for two at White Rock (late 2025 to 2026). Palmilla is more relaxed, and Klive is built into the cliff over several levels near the western end. You do not need a club to use the public beach.

  5. 05

    The Melasti Kecak

An open-air stage in the beach complex hosts its own Kecak at about 6 pm, telling the Situbanda episode of the Ramayana, when Rama’s army builds the bridge to Lanka. It is smaller and more relaxed than the show at Uluwatu Temple. Tickets cost about IDR 150,000 (checked Oct 2026); early-2026 listings gave Friday to Sunday only, so confirm the day.

  6. 06

Pura Segara and the Melasti ceremony

The small sea temple on the shore is why the road exists. A few days before Nyepi, usually in March, processions from Ungasan bring offerings and temple effigies to the water for the Melasti purification, and the beach fills with people in white. Visitors can watch from a respectful distance; keep clear of the offerings and do not fly drones over the ceremony.

  7. 07

    The public beach

Away from the clubs, the beach runs for about a kilometer of open sand. Free toilets, showers and foot-wash taps sit near the car park, warungs and the Kuliner Rakyat food area sell coconuts, drinks and simple meals, and two sunbeds with an umbrella rent for about IDR 100,000–150,000. Walk west or east along the sand to leave the crowd behind.

Seasons

Best time to visit Melasti Beach.

Come on a weekday morning, before about 9 am, for the calmest water, empty sand and soft light on the cliffs; by late morning the heat and the tour groups arrive. Low tide gives the shallow lagoons and rock pools, while mid to high tide is better for a proper swim inside the reef. Check a tide table for the Bukit before you go.

The dry season from April to October brings clearer water and steady sun. From November to March, rain and rougher seas can make the water murky, and the lifeguards’ flags matter more. Weekends, Indonesian holidays and the Christmas to New Year weeks bring buses of domestic visitors. Late afternoon, from about 4 pm, is the time for colored skies and the Kecak.

Getting There

How to get to Melasti Beach.

Travel times to Melasti Beach
Uluwatu Temple and Pecatu20–30 min (about 12 km)Car or scooter east along the Ungasan roads. Easy to pair with the temple or Kecak the same day.

Nusa Dua25–45 min (about 15 km)Car or scooter across the peninsula; Pandawa Beach is on the way.
Jimbaran25–45 min (about 11 km)Car or scooter up Jalan Raya Uluwatu, then east through Ungasan.
Seminyak1–1.5 hours (about 25 km)Car with driver or Grab via the bypass. Leave before 3 pm or after 7 pm.
Canggu1.5–2 hours (about 35 km)Car with driver. Better as part of a Bukit day than as a beach trip on its own.
Ubud2–2.5 hours (about 50 km)Private driver for a long day, usually with Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak.

Getting around Melasti Beach

The main entrance is off the Ungasan road just before Umana Resort: a wide, paved road down through the cutting that takes cars, scooters and tour buses straight to parking at beach level. A second road near The Surga Villa Estate is steep and still under construction, so use the main one. Parking costs about IDR 3,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car (checked Oct 2026), paid with the entry fee at the gate. Carry cash, as some guides report cash only.

Grab and Gojek drop off at Melasti, and a driver who waits is easiest for the return, especially after sunset when the car park empties at once. On a scooter, take the hairpins slowly: the road is steep and limestone dust from building work makes it slippery. On the sand everything is on foot, and the beach is about a kilometer long, so a club at the far end can be a 10 to 15 minute walk from the car park.

Know Before You Go

Melasti Beach tips that save time and trouble.

  1. 01Bring cash for the entry fee, parking and the Kecak, even though some counters now take cards.
  2. 02Swim only between the flags and only in daylight, when lifeguards are on duty.
  3. 03Pack reef shoes for low tide; urchins and sharp coral sit around the rock pools.
  4. 04Bring a hat and shade or rent an umbrella; the beach has almost no trees.
  5. 05Ask at the gate before flying a drone; a fee of about IDR 500,000 has been charged.
  6. 06Do not expect the sun to set into the sea; for that, go to Uluwatu Temple or a west-facing beach.
  7. 07Confirm the Kecak day before planning around it; the schedule has changed by season.
  8. 08Search for “Melasti Beach Ungasan” in maps apps, as a different spot near Tanah Lot shares the name.

FAQ

Melasti Beach questions, answered.

How much is the Melasti Beach entrance fee?

About IDR 15,000 for foreign adults and IDR 3,000 for children (checked Oct 2026), paid at the gate at the top of the cliff road. Some guides list IDR 10,000, the domestic rate. Parking is extra: about IDR 3,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car. Beach clubs charge separately.

Is Melasti Beach good for swimming?

Yes, it is one of the better swimming beaches on the Bukit. A reef about 100 meters offshore breaks the waves, so the water inside is usually calm and clear. Swim between the red-and-yellow flags while lifeguards are on duty in daylight, and stay away from the cliffs at each end, where currents are stronger.

Is there a Kecak dance at Melasti Beach?

Yes. An open-air stage in the beach complex hosts a Kecak at about 6 pm, telling the Situbanda episode of the Ramayana. Tickets cost about IDR 150,000 (checked Oct 2026). Early-2026 listings gave Friday to Sunday only, and the schedule has varied by season, so confirm the day before you go.

Where is Melasti Beach?

In Ungasan village, South Kuta district, on the south coast of the Bukit Peninsula. It is usually sold as part of Uluwatu, but Uluwatu Temple is in neighboring Pecatu, about 12 km and 20 to 30 minutes away by road. Search “Melasti Beach Ungasan” to get the right pin.

Can you see the sunset at Melasti Beach?

Partly. The beach faces south, so the sun goes down behind the headland to the west rather than into the sea. You still get colored skies and warm light on the cliffs. For the sun dropping into the ocean, go to Uluwatu Temple or a west-facing beach on the Bukit instead.

Do you have to pay for a beach club at Melasti?

No. The public beach, sand and water are open to anyone who pays the small entry fee, and you can rent sunbeds from local stalls. Tropical Temptation and White Rock have no entry fee but set minimum spends on daybeds, from about IDR 800,000 to IDR 1,000,000 for two in recent listings.

Are the Melasti beach clubs being demolished?

Not so far. In August 2025 Badung warned eight Melasti businesses, including Tropical Temptation, White Rock, Palmilla and Klive, over coastal zoning, but the regent chose to review each case rather than demolish. By October 2026 no demolition had been reported and the clubs were trading. Check recent news before booking an event.

Melasti or Pandawa Beach?

Both have cliff-cut roads and calm water inside a reef. Melasti is longer, more developed and has the beach clubs and a Kecak; Pandawa, 15 to 20 minutes east in Kutuh, has statues of the Pandawa brothers set into the cliff and a more local feel. Families who want facilities usually prefer Melasti.

What is the best time to visit Melasti Beach?

A weekday morning before 9 am in the dry season, April to October, gives the calmest water and the fewest people. Come at low tide for rock pools, mid to high tide for swimming, and from about 4 pm if you want sunset colors and the Kecak. Avoid weekends and Indonesian holidays if you can.

Is there another Melasti Beach near Tanah Lot?

Yes, which confuses maps and tours. A small shore near Tanah Lot in Beraban, Tabanan, also called Yeh Kutikan, is sometimes labeled Melasti Beach and has a seasonal waterfall fed by rice-field irrigation. The famous white-sand beach with the cliff road is the one in Ungasan on the Bukit.
