Munduk Travel Guide

Waterfalls, lakes and cool air in the clove hills.

By The Bali Guideline Editorial TeamUpdated 15 October 2026

Area Brief

What Munduk is really like.

Munduk is a ridge-top village at about 800 m in Bali’s northern highlands, below Lakes Tamblingan and Buyan, known for waterfall walks, dugout canoes and coffee and clove farms. It suits walkers who do not mind rain. It is 2.5 to 3 hours by car from the airport and 45 to 60 minutes above Lovina.

Munduk is a farming village of about 7,400 people strung along a ridge at roughly 800 m in Buleleng, on the western rim of the old Bratan caldera. Above it lie Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan, at about 1,200 m. Below it, more than 500 ha of cloves and about 300 ha of coffee fall away toward the Bali Sea, with waterfalls in the valleys between.

Munduk averages about 22.6°C, dry-season nights fall to 17–19°C, and it rains in most months, usually after lunch; cloud often fills the valleys until about 8 am. Homestays line the ridge road, but restaurants are few, Grab and Gojek do not work here and ATMs are scarce. Fees at the three best-known waterfalls have climbed to IDR 45,000–50,000 in 2026 reports, and paid swings now crowd the Wanagiri viewpoint.

Read the full overview

Tamblingan is sacred to the Catur Desa, the villages of Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing and Umejero, and is kept for quiet: dugout canoes, forest temples, no motorboats. Its forest, which the villages call Alas Mertajati, became a nature tourism park in 1996, and in mid-2026 they were still seeking its recognition as customary forest. Next door, Lake Buyan is planned for busier tourism, and in June and July 2026 a 47-day clean-up cleared water hyacinth from its surface.

Visitors are not new here. Dutch officials from Singaraja, the colonial capital, came up for the cool air around 1900; by about 1905 a colonial rest house took foreign guests and tuberculosis patients. Munduk arabica was shipped to Europe until cloves paid better, and a cluster of colonial buildings, now mostly guesthouses, still stands midway along the ridge.

Munduk vs Bedugul: Bedugul, 30 to 40 minutes east, has the famous lake temple and the tour buses; Munduk has the trails and the quiet. Munduk vs Ubud: Ubud has the food, dance and shopping; Munduk has forest, cold water and almost nothing to do after dark.

Munduk is a good fit if…

  • Waterfall walks, from a 20-minute stroll to a six-hour trek
  • Canoeing a sacred, motorboat-free lake at sunrise
  • Cool 17–19°C nights after the heat of the south
  • Coffee and clove farm walks with village guides

Skip it if…

  • Rain spoils your day: it falls in most months, usually after lunch
  • You want nightlife or a real choice of restaurants
  • Steep stairs are a problem: Melanting alone has about 500 steps
  • You only have a day: the drive from the south takes five hours of it

Neighborhoods

Which part of Munduk to base yourself in.

Munduk is not one place. Each pocket has its own pace, noise level and walking distance to the things you came for.

Gold labels are the neighborhoods below. Numbered pins match the things-to-do list; zoom out for the day trips.

  1. 01

Munduk village and the ridge road

Munduk strings out for several kilometers along a narrow ridge at about 800 m, and almost everything sits on its one road: homestays, eco-lodges, warungs, a small market and the trailheads for Red Coral, Melanting and Labuhan Kebo. Restaurants are few and close early, so most people eat where they sleep.

Best for: Walkers who want waterfalls from the door

  2. 02

    Gobleg and Lake Tamblingan

Tamblingan lies above Munduk at about 1,200 m, the smallest of the three caldera lakes, with only the hamlet of Gubug on its shore. Gobleg, next to Munduk, is one of the four Catur Desa villages that look after it. Expect canoes, forest temples and guided treks, not hotels.

Best for: Early risers after mist, canoes and temples

  3. 03

    Wanagiri and Lake Buyan

East of Munduk the road climbs to Wanagiri, on the caldera rim at about 1,220 m. This is the busy side: the twin-lakes viewpoint with its paid swings, the Banyumala, Banyu Wana Amertha and Pucak Manik falls, and macaques by the road. Below, Lake Buyan fills the valley at Pancasari, on the road to Bedugul.

Best for: Waterfall swimmers and travelers passing through from Bedugul

  4. 04

Gesing, Banyuatis and the western farms

West of the village the road runs on through Gesing, a Catur Desa village, and Banyuatis, farm country where clove and coffee gardens cover the slopes. There are few guesthouses and almost no tourist traffic. Umejero, the fourth Catur Desa village, lies to the south-west at about 700 m.

Best for: Repeat visitors after quiet lodges and farm walks

  5. 05

The road down to Seririt and Lovina

The road west drops through Banyuatis to the Seririt–Pupuan road and reaches the coast at Seririt, about 20 km away; Lovina is another 11 km east. Allow 45 to 60 minutes on the steep, winding road. The Banjar hot springs sit just off the coast road.

Best for: Travelers moving on to Lovina, Pemuteran or Menjangan

  1. Munduk Waterfall falling down a dark, moss-covered cliff into a rocky pool, with a woman sitting on a boulder01

    Nature

    Munduk Waterfall (Red Coral)

Car park on the main road through Munduk

The fall most people mean by Munduk Waterfall, also called Red Coral, drops in one tall stream beside a fern-hung cliff. A mostly concrete path runs about 650 m down from the main-road car park, 20 minutes each way. The rocky pool is too shallow to swim, so people dip in a small man-made pool beside it.

Tip: About IDR 45,000 per adult in mid-2026 reports, up from IDR 20,000; parking IDR 2,000–3,000.

  2. 02Adventure

    Lake Tamblingan by dugout canoe

Lake Tamblingan car park, 15–20 min by road east of Munduk

Tamblingan is the smallest and wildest of the three caldera lakes, ringed by forest at about 1,200 m. Village boatmen paddle visitors out in dugouts carved from single trunks, and no motorboats are allowed, unlike on Lake Beratan. Go at sunrise, when mist lies on the water.

Tip: About IDR 150,000–250,000 per boat for roughly 30 minutes (2026 reports); agree the price first.

  3. Banyumala’s twin falls spilling down a mossy cliff into a pool, with two women in swimwear at the water’s edge03

    Nature

    Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

Wanagiri, 25–35 min east of Munduk

Two main streams and dozens of thinner ones pour down a mossy cliff into a cold pool, waist to chest deep and the best for swimming in the area. It sits about 3 km down a potholed lane in Wanagiri, then 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the ticket booth.

Tip: IDR 50,000, cash only, under-10s free (checked Oct 2026). Arrive before 10 am; noon to 2 pm is busiest.

  4. 04Adventure

    Walking the Munduk waterfall trail

Between Golden Valley and Melanting, along the Munduk ridge

Signposted village paths link four falls: Golden Valley, Red Coral, Labuhan Kebo and Melanting. Walking all four takes three to six hours, down long flights of steps. It is point to point, so arrange a driver at both ends. Golden Valley, 250 m below the road, is free, with a donation box and a café.

Tip: Parts are missing from Google Maps; download an offline map and wear shoes with grip.

  5. 05Nature

    Melanting and Labuhan Kebo waterfalls

Trailhead near Melanting Cottages, Munduk–Gobleg border

The two biggest falls on the trail share a trailhead on the Munduk–Gobleg border, near Melanting Cottages. Labuhan Kebo is about 200 steps below the path; Melanting, the most powerful, lies at the bottom of roughly 500 steep steps. Allow two and a half hours for both. Melanting is sometimes also called Munduk Waterfall.

Tip: IDR 20,000 each, cash only; Melanting’s ticket is sold at a shop above the stairs.

  6. 06Temple

Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan and the lake temples

Shore of Lake Tamblingan, below the Munduk–Wanagiri road

Copper inscriptions found in Gobleg record a settlement at Tamblingan in the 10th century. Its people later founded the four Catur Desa villages, which still tend 11 temples around the lake. Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan stands at the water’s edge behind mossy gates; in the wet season, shrines such as Pura Gubug stand in the water.

Tip: Lake ticket IDR 20,000–30,000 (2026 reports). Dress modestly, keep out of inner courtyards, do not swim.

Seasons

Best time to visit Munduk.

Munduk is cooler and wetter than the south all year. The wet season runs from about November to March, heaviest in December and January: the falls run fullest and Tamblingan’s shrines stand in water, but trails and stairs turn slick. April to October brings drier mornings and nights of 17–19°C, lower in July and August.

Start early in any month: cloud often fills the valleys until about 8 am and builds again after midday. July, August and Indonesian holidays bring crowds to the Wanagiri viewpoint and Bedugul. Nyepi closes the island for 24 hours on Monday 8 March 2027, and Galungan falls on 13 January and 11 August 2027, when village temples fill with worshippers.

Everything else needs wheels: Tamblingan is 15–20 minutes by road, the Wanagiri viewpoint about 20, Banyumala and Banyu Wana Amertha 25–35. Roads are narrow, steep and often foggy, so most visitors hire a car with driver.

Scooters rent for about IDR 100,000 a day (2026 reports) and suit experienced riders only. Grab and Gojek do not operate here and there are no taxis. ATMs are only at a petrol station and in Bedugul, and both can run dry at weekends.
