Overview

Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park, before you go.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park is a 60-hectare park in Ungasan, about 6 km up the hill from Jimbaran Bay and 30 to 40 minutes from the airport, built around a 121-meter statue of Vishnu riding Garuda. It is worth a late afternoon for the statue, the dances and the view from inside it, less so if heat and long walks put you off.

The statue is the work of Balinese sculptor I Nyoman Nuarta, who designed it in 1990. Groundbreaking came in 1997, the Asian financial crisis stopped the work soon after, and the project sat unfinished for 16 years until the developer Alam Sutera took it over in 2013. The last modules went up in July 2018, and President Joko Widodo inaugurated the monument on 22 September 2018. It stands 121 meters in all: a 75-meter figure of copper and brass over a steel frame, on a 46-meter pedestal, with wings 64 meters across. It is the tallest statue in Indonesia, and GWK bills it as the fourth-tallest in the world. A 23-meter Vishnu bust and an 18-meter Garuda head stand in their own plazas nearby.

The story behind it comes from the Mahabharata. Garuda’s mother, Winata, has become the slave of her sister Kadru, mother of the serpents, and only tirta amerta, the elixir of immortality, can free her. Garuda fights his way past the gods’ armies to reach it, and Vishnu, moved by his devotion, lets him take it on condition that Garuda becomes his mount. That is the scene on the hill: Vishnu the preserver riding the bird that stands for loyalty and sacrifice. Kencana means gold, which is why Vishnu’s crown is covered in gold glass mosaic shipped from Italy.

The park was cut into a limestone hill, so much of the visit is a walk between sheer quarried walls, open plazas and the 4,000 m² Lotus Pond, where President Widodo welcomed G20 leaders to a cultural dinner in November 2022. During the day dancers perform roughly every hour, mostly on the amphitheater stage; from Wednesday to Saturday the BarAong show starts at 6 pm; and a guided tour takes you up inside the statue to the 9th and 23rd floors.

Know what you are paying for. GWK is a privately run cultural park, not a temple, although a small shrine with a spring, Parahyangan Somaka Giri, sits beside the Vishnu bust. Prices have climbed: the regular ticket is IDR 150,000 and the statue tour package IDR 400,000, against IDR 300,000 in GWK’s own 2024 listing. Paths are long, shade is scarce, and by midday the pale stone reflects the heat. Come after 3 pm, buy the ticket that matches your day, and it is one of the easiest half-days on the Bukit.

What to See

What to see at Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park.

  1. 01

The statue and the Titian Garuda bridge

The main statue rises from the highest part of the park, and the closer you get, the more detail shows: copper skin hammered by hand into triangular plates, a green patina sped up with acid, and Garuda’s head turned to the left. Nuarta’s explanation is that Garuda must look at evil as well as good to keep life in balance. The 239-meter Titian Garuda footbridge links the statue to Plaza Garuda and is GWK’s own pick for sunset.

  2. 02

    Top of the Statue tour

The tour, sold only as the IDR 400,000 Ultimate package with park entry, takes you by lift into the statue. The 9th floor holds dioramas, sketches and memorabilia from the long construction, plus a short animated film. A glass lift continues to the 23rd floor, about 90 meters up, with a glass floor and windows over the airport runway, Jimbaran, Kuta and Nusa Dua. GWK says the guided tour takes about 45 minutes; confirm your slot at the information desk in Plaza Bhagawan.

  3. 03

    Daily dances in the amphitheater

GWK lists 15 short performances a day between 10 am and 5 pm, mostly on the open-air amphitheater stage, which seats about 800. Highlights include Oleg Tamulilingan, a bumblebee courtship duet, at 11 am and 3 pm; the Barong and Bojog dance, with monkey-masked dancers teasing the Barong, at 3 pm; a parade of two trance dances, Sanghyang Jaran and Sanghyang Dedari, at 4 pm; and Joged Bumbung at 5 pm, when dancers pull people from the audience.

  4. 04

    The BarAong evening show

BarAong is GWK’s modern Barong show, with oversized masks, stage lighting and music, running from 6 to 6:30 pm in the amphitheater, Wednesday to Saturday only. Prince Bara’s kingdom is struck by disaster, and he must unite three Barongs, the white tiger Sang Mong, the black boar Sang Bawi and the red lion Sang Banas, to save it. It is family-friendly and interactive rather than a temple dance. A show-only ticket costs IDR 125,000, or IDR 200,000 with day entry.

  5. 05

The Lotus Pond and the GWK Kecak

The Lotus Pond is the park’s largest space, more than 4,000 m² of open ground between tall limestone pillars with room for 7,000 people, and it hosts concerts, festivals and state dinners. GWK’s schedule also lists a Kecak at 6 pm every day here, a version that tells Garuda’s quest instead of the Ramayana and adds giant ogoh-ogoh figures. The October 2026 ticket pages do not mention it, so ask at the gate whether it is on.

  6. 06

Plaza Wisnu and Parahyangan Somaka Giri

Climb to Plaza Wisnu, the highest point of the park, for the 23-meter copper bust of Vishnu. Beside it, up a stairway lined with white and yellow umbrellas, is Parahyangan Somaka Giri, a shrine around a spring that locals say never dries. A priest (jro mangku) can lead a short prayer, sprinkle holy water and tie on a red, white and black tridatu bracelet; GWK says this is covered by the ticket. Wear a sarong here.

  7. 07

Plaza Kura-Kura and the Vishnu avatars

Stairs lined with naga statues lead to Plaza Kura-Kura, a small garden with a turtle pond and a statue of Dewi Laksmi, Vishnu’s consort and the goddess of prosperity, at its end. Visitors toss coins into the pond for luck, and four reliefs show avatars of Vishnu, among them the fish Matsya and the boar Varaha. GWK runs short sessions here on making canang, the palm-leaf offerings you see on every Balinese doorstep.

  8. 08

Jendela Bali and the view north

Jendela Bali, the restaurant at the park entrance, sits on the edge of the hill with a view over Jimbaran, the airport and Denpasar, and on clear days the mountains beyond. GWK says you can eat there without a park ticket, and a free shuttle links it with the parking area. From 1 September 2026 any order also brings a free dessert for park ticket holders. Go at dusk, when the lights come on across the bay.

Seasons

Best time to visit Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park.

Arrive around 3 or 4 pm. The heat drops, the Barong and Bojog dance starts at 3 pm, the parade at 4 pm and Joged Bumbung at 5 pm, and you can finish with the 6 pm BarAong and the sunset over the Bukit, between about 6:05 and 6:45 pm depending on the month. Mornings are quieter, as GWK itself suggests, but the plazas have little shade and are hot by 11 am. For the statue tour, a clear day matters more than the hour.

Plan the day of the week too. BarAong runs only from Wednesday to Saturday, and the combined day-and-show ticket cannot be booked for other days. Indonesian school holidays, the Lebaran (Eid) week and Christmas to New Year bring domestic crowds and tour buses. On 31 December regular tickets are not sold because of the Bali Countdown party, and GWK’s Ogoh-ogoh festival around Nyepi was open on festival tickets only on its 2026 date, 22 March. On Nyepi itself, 8 March 2027, the whole island closes.

The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest views from the 23rd floor. From November to March, afternoon storms can soak the outdoor dances, and GWK tells visitors to come ready for sun or rain; the statue tour and Jendela Bali are the sheltered parts of the park.

Getting There

How to get to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park.

Travel times to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park
Jimbaran Bay15–25 min, longer from 4 to 7 pmAbout 5–6 km up Jalan Raya Uluwatu by car, Grab or scooter. Sunset traffic heading south jams the Jimbaran junction, so leave the bay by 3:30 pm.
Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS)30–40 minAbout 11–13 km by car, through Jimbaran or via the Bali Mandara toll road toward Nusa Dua. GWK quoted IDR 140,000–170,000 by airport taxi and IDR 100,000–150,000 by Grab or Gojek in 2025.
Uluwatu (Pecatu, Bingin, the temple)20–40 minAbout 11–13 km east along Jalan Raya Uluwatu. Visit GWK first, by early afternoon, if you also want the temple’s 6 pm Kecak.
Nusa Dua20–30 minAbout 10 km by car or scooter along the bypass and up through Ungasan.
Kuta or Seminyak35–50 min from Kuta, 50–75 min from SeminyakAbout 14 km from Kuta and 19 km from Seminyak by car via the bypass or the toll road. Add 30 minutes or more between 4 and 7 pm.
Canggu1–1.5 hoursAbout 27–29 km by car or driver via Sunset Road and the bypass; longer in the evening rush.
Ubud1.5–2.5 hoursAbout 44 km by private driver through Denpasar and the bypass. Better on the way to a night in the south than as a day trip.

Getting around Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park

Cars and scooters park in large lots at the entrance. From Parkir A a free shuttle runs to Plaza Bhagawan, the ticket counter and main gate, and to Jendela Bali. You can buy tickets at Plaza Bhagawan or online on ticket.gwkbali.com, paying by card, GoPay, OVO or QRIS; the e-ticket arrives by email.

From Plaza Bhagawan to the statue is about 1 km on foot, past the Street Theatre shops and the Lotus Pond, on paved paths with slopes and steps, especially up to Plaza Wisnu. If walking is hard, add the buggy: IDR 40,000 per person for one trip from Plaza Bhagawan to the statue and on to Festival Park, sold only with an entry ticket. GWK’s 2025 notes put shuttle hours at 10 am to 6 pm. Tickets are valid all day, and a hand stamp at the exit gate lets you come back in.

Grab, Gojek and taxis drop off at the entrance. Getting a ride out is slower after the 6 pm show, when the amphitheater empties at once, so keep your driver or agree on a pickup time. On a scooter, Jalan Raya Uluwatu is steep and busy with tour buses, and the ride back to Jimbaran after dark needs care.

FAQ

Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park questions, answered.

How much is the GWK ticket price?

Regular entry is IDR 150,000, and the Ultimate package with the Top of the Statue tour is IDR 400,000 (checked Oct 2026). On Wednesday to Saturday you can also buy entry plus the BarAong show for IDR 200,000, or the show alone for IDR 125,000, which includes the park after 6 pm. The buggy costs IDR 40,000 per person, and children under 100 cm are free.

What are GWK’s opening hours?

GWK opens daily, but it does not publish gate times on its ticket site. Its own 2025 articles give opening at 8 or 9 am and closing around 9 pm, while older listings say 8 am to 10 pm. Performances run from 10 am, and on BarAong nights the park stays open after the 6 pm show. Confirm the closing time at the gate.

Is GWK worth it?

Yes, if you like big monuments, Balinese dance and engineering, or travel with children: the scale of the statue and the Barong show make an easy afternoon near Jimbaran. It is less worth it if you want an old temple or dislike heat; at IDR 150,000 it costs more than Uluwatu Temple, and much of the visit is walking across open stone plazas.

Is the Top of the Statue tour worth the extra cost?

For most first-time visitors, yes. The package costs IDR 400,000 against IDR 150,000 for regular entry, and includes a guided visit of about 45 minutes to the 9th-floor museum and the 23rd floor, about 90 meters up, with a glass floor and views over the airport and the south coast. Skip it on a hazy day or if heights bother you.

How tall is the GWK statue?

The monument stands 121 meters including its 46-meter pedestal, so the figure of Vishnu on Garuda is 75 meters tall on its own. The wings span 64 meters, and it weighs about 4,000 tonnes. It is the tallest statue in Indonesia, taller than the Statue of Liberty with its pedestal, and GWK bills it as the fourth-tallest in the world.

Who built GWK, and when was it finished?

Balinese sculptor I Nyoman Nuarta designed the statue in 1990, and building began in 1997. The 1997 Asian financial crisis halted the project for 16 years, until Alam Sutera Realty took it over in 2013. The last of more than 700 modules went up in July 2018, and President Joko Widodo inaugurated the statue on 22 September 2018.

What shows are on at GWK, and at what time?

GWK lists 15 daytime performances between 10 am and 5 pm, including the Barong and Bojog dance at 3 pm and Joged Bumbung at 5 pm, all covered by the regular ticket. The BarAong show runs from 6 to 6:30 pm, Wednesday to Saturday, on a separate ticket. GWK’s schedule also lists a daily 6 pm Kecak at the Lotus Pond; check at the gate.

How long do you need at GWK?

GWK says most visits take 2 hours, enough to walk to the statue, see Plaza Wisnu and catch a dance or two. Allow 3 to 4 hours if you add the 45-minute statue tour and the 6 pm BarAong, and more if you stay for dinner at Jendela Bali. Add 15 to 25 minutes each way from Jimbaran.

Should I see the Kecak at Uluwatu or a show at GWK?

Pick Uluwatu for the classic Ramayana Kecak on a clifftop at sunset, for IDR 150,000 plus temple entry, with big crowds and a slow drive back. Pick GWK for the BarAong, a modern family show much closer to Jimbaran and the airport. Both start at 6 pm, so you cannot do both on the same evening.

How do I get to GWK from the airport?

By car, about 11 to 13 km and 30 to 40 minutes, through Jimbaran or via the Bali Mandara toll road. In 2025 GWK quoted IDR 140,000–170,000 by airport taxi and IDR 100,000–150,000 by Grab or Gojek. Leave luggage at your hotel first if you can; the park involves a long walk.

Is there a shuttle inside GWK?

Yes. A free shuttle runs from Parkir A to Plaza Bhagawan, the ticket gate, and to Jendela Bali. Inside, the buggy costs IDR 40,000 per person for one trip from Plaza Bhagawan to the statue and on to Festival Park, and must be bought with an entry ticket. Without it, the walk to the statue is about 1 km with slopes.

Can you buy GWK tickets at the gate?

Yes, at the ticket counter in Plaza Bhagawan. Booking online on ticket.gwkbali.com saves the queue and, according to GWK, is the safer choice for the BarAong at weekends and on holidays. Pick your date first, since the show tickets only appear for Wednesday to Saturday and some event dates, such as 31 December, are closed to regular tickets.
