Padang Padang Beach, Uluwatu: A Visitor’s Guide
A small cove through a crack in the cliff, with calm water and a world-famous barrel.

Overview
Padang Padang Beach, before you go.
Padang Padang, officially Labuan Sait Beach, is a small white-sand cove on Uluwatu’s west coast, reached by about 120 steps through a gap between a fallen boulder and the cliff. It is worth a morning for swimmers, surf watchers and learners at Baby Padang, but it is small and packed by mid-morning, so come early.
Padang Padang is the popular name for Labuan Sait Beach in Pecatu, a cove tucked into the limestone cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula about 4 km from Uluwatu Temple. The same management runs both, and it keeps the beach open from 7 am to 7 pm. Getting down is half the fun: from the ticket counter on Jalan Labuansait, a steep paved staircase of about 120 steps drops into a crevice, squeezes between a fallen boulder and the cliff face, and lets you out on the sand.
The beach itself is small. The main sandy stretch is under 80 meters long, backed by cliffs and a row of warungs, and the bay shelters it from most of the swell, so the water inside is usually calm and clear enough for a proper swim. Tides matter. At low tide there is more sand and a few rock pools; at high tide the beach shrinks, waves reach the rocks and everyone’s towels end up crowded together. On big-swell days the shore break can be too rough for children.
Out on the reef is the reason surfers know the name. The Padang Padang Left, nicknamed the Balinese Pipeline, is a short, heavy barrel over very shallow reef that only breaks properly on a big swell, perhaps 25 days a year. It hosts the Rip Curl Cup, a one-day tube-riding contest that waits for the best swell of August; the 23rd edition ran in 2026. Across the channel, Padang Padang Right, or Baby Padang, is a softer peak where surf schools take beginners.
The beach also has a film credit: it was one of the Bali locations for Eat Pray Love (2010), starring Julia Roberts. Before Nyepi, the village holds its Melasti purification ceremony on the sand.
The catches are real. It is one of the busiest beaches in Uluwatu, and in high season the umbrellas are gone by 8 or 9 am. A troop of long-tailed macaques works the entrance, the stairs and the trees above the sand. Shade is limited to rented umbrellas, and the cove faces north, so the cliff blocks the sunset. The beach is also the Uluwatu stop for GoBoat, which runs scheduled boats along the west coast to Canggu.

The rock-crevice staircase
The way in is the beach’s signature. About 120 steep, paved steps lead down from the ticket counter, with no handrail on much of the way, and the path ends in a narrow gap between a huge fallen boulder and the cliff. Locals sweep the steps to keep them less slippery. Going down takes a few minutes; the climb back in the midday heat is the hard part, and it is not possible with a stroller or wheelchair.
- 02
Swimming in the cove
The bay shelters the sand from most of the swell, so on a normal day you get calm, clear water over a sandy bottom, one of the better swims on Uluwatu’s west coast. The management lists lifeguards on duty, but read the water yourself: on big-swell days the shore break gets heavy, and the far ends of the beach run into reef and rock. Low to mid tide gives the most sand and the gentlest entry.
- 03
Padang Padang Left and the Rip Curl Cup
The left-hand reef break off the beach is one of the heaviest waves in Bali: thick, hollow barrels over very shallow reef that need a big swell, ideally double overhead, to work. Surf camps are blunt that it is for advanced surfers only. The Rip Curl Cup waits for the best day each August, and in 2026 Lucy Darragh and Rajo Saputra won the 23rd edition. On a contest or big-swell day the beach and cliff become a grandstand.
- 04
Baby Padang for learners
Across the deep-water channel from the Left, Padang Padang Right, known as Baby Padang, is a reef peak that breaks both ways: a short, soft right that fades into the channel and a longer left that can run toward Impossibles. It suits beginners and intermediates when it is shoulder to head high, best on a mid to high tide. The channel current carries you out, but the lineup gets crowded with foam boards.
- 05
Warungs and beach facilities
About a dozen vendors sell coconuts, drinks and simple plates such as nasi goreng, for around IDR 50,000. Umbrellas rent for about IDR 100,000 and a few beanbags appear some days, but loungers are scarce and shade is gone once the umbrellas are taken. Free toilets and showers sit at the back of the beach, with outdoor showers and a foot wash near the entrance. Surfboards rent for about IDR 100,000 an hour.
- 06
The GoBoat stop to Canggu
GoBoat’s Uluwatu stop is on Padang Padang Beach. The company runs scheduled transfers along the west coast between Uluwatu, Jimbaran, Nuanu and Canggu, and the hop to Nelayan Beach in Canggu takes about 35 minutes on the water, against 1.5 to 2.5 hours by road. Boats depend on the weather and the sea and leave from the beach, so keep luggage light for the stairs and book online.
Seasons
Best time to visit Padang Padang Beach.
Arrive between 7 and 9 am. The light is soft, the water is calm and you can still find space on the sand; by 10 am in July and August the beach is packed and the umbrellas are gone. Weekends and Indonesian holidays add local crowds. Late afternoon is pleasant, but do not come for the sunset itself, because the cove faces north and the cliff hides the sun.
Check the tide before you go. Low to mid tide gives the most sand and the easiest swimming, while at high tide the beach shrinks and waves wash up to the rocks. On big-swell days, common from June to August, the shore break can be rough for children.
April to October is the best season, with dry weather, clear water and the Left at its best. From November to March, rain runoff can cloud the water and bring debris, but smaller swells make Baby Padang friendlier for learners. Surf fans can watch the Rip Curl Cup, which runs on a single day in August when the swell peaks.
Getting There
How to get to Padang Padang Beach.
| From | Time | How |
|---|---|---|
| Uluwatu Temple | 10–15 min | Scooter or car north along Jalan Raya Uluwatu and Jalan Labuansait, about 4 km. |
| Bingin and Jalan Labuansait cafes | 5–10 min | Scooter along Jalan Labuansait. The road is narrow with few footpaths, so walking is possible but not pleasant. |
| Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) | 40–90 min | Car via Jimbaran, about 19 km. Private transfers cost roughly USD 35–45; avoid 4–7 pm, when the Jimbaran junction jams. |
| Jimbaran | 20–30 min | Car or scooter up Jalan Raya Uluwatu, about 11 km. |
| Seminyak and Kuta | 1–2 hours | Car or driver via the bypass and Jimbaran: about 1–1.5 hours from Kuta and 1.25–2 hours from Seminyak. |
| Canggu | 35 min by boat, 1.5–2.5 hours by road | GoBoat’s scheduled boat from Nelayan Beach lands on Padang Padang Beach, weather permitting. By road, take a driver and avoid the afternoon rush. |
| Ubud | 2–3 hours | Private driver. Pair it with Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak for a long day. |
Getting around Padang Padang Beach
The ticket counter is on Jalan Labuansait, with the parking lot across the road. Parking costs about IDR 2,000 for a scooter and IDR 3,000 for a car (checked Oct 2026), cash. The lot is small, so in high season a scooter or a drop-off is easier than a car. Lock your helmet to the bike or take it with you: the monkeys around the lot pull at anything left on a seat.
Grab and Gojek drop off at the entrance without trouble. Pickups are less reliable: some visitors are collected at the entrance, but local transport groups restrict app pickups around the beach at times, and drivers may cancel. Have a fallback, such as walking along Jalan Labuansait to a cafe or booking a driver for the return.
Inside, everything is on foot. The 120 steps are the only way down and back, so carry what you need in one trip, wear sandals with grip, and bring cash for the ticket, parking, food and umbrella rental, since card machines are rare.
Know Before You Go
Padang Padang Beach tips that save time and trouble.
- 01Bring cash: IDR 15,000 per adult for entry, plus parking, food and about IDR 100,000 if you want an umbrella.
- 02Zip bags shut and keep sunglasses, hats and snacks out of sight on the stairs and near the trees. Do not leave anything on the rocks at the back of the beach.
- 03If a monkey grabs something, do not chase it. Ask a beach worker for help.
- 04Arrive before 9 am in high season if you want an umbrella; loungers are scarce and there is little natural shade.
- 05Swim near the middle of the cove and stay out of the water on big-swell days, when the shore break gets heavy.
- 06Wear sandals with grip for the stairs, and reef shoes if you want to explore the rocks at low tide.
- 07Beginners should surf Baby Padang only with a lesson or a local who knows the channel, and stay well away from the Left.
- 08Bring water and sun protection. The sand is very exposed, and shade is limited to the rented umbrellas.
- 09Plan your ride home. App pickups at the entrance are hit and miss, so agree on a return time with your driver.
FAQ
Padang Padang Beach questions, answered.
How much is the entrance fee to Padang Padang Beach?
IDR 15,000 for foreign adults and IDR 10,000 for foreign children (checked Oct 2026), per the official management. Indonesian visitors pay IDR 10,000 and IDR 5,000. Pay in cash at the counter on Jalan Labuansait. Parking is extra, about IDR 2,000 for a scooter and IDR 3,000 for a car.
What are Padang Padang Beach’s opening hours?
Daily from 7 am to 7 pm. The best time to arrive is before 9 am, when the water is calm and there is still space and shade on the sand. Like the rest of Bali, the beach closes on Nyepi, the Day of Silence, usually in March.
Can you swim at Padang Padang Beach?
Yes, on most days. The cove is sheltered by the bay, the bottom is sandy and the water is usually calm, which makes it one of the better swimming beaches on Uluwatu’s west coast. Swim at low to mid tide and near the middle of the cove, and stay out on big-swell days, when the shore break gets rough. The management lists lifeguards on duty.
Is Padang Padang good for beginner surfers?
Only at Baby Padang, the softer peak across the channel, and only when it is shoulder to head high on a mid to high tide. Surf schools run lessons there; semi-private sessions cost about IDR 500,000. The main Padang Padang Left is a heavy barrel over shallow reef and is strictly for advanced surfers.
Is Padang Padang the Eat Pray Love beach?
Yes. Padang Padang was one of the Bali filming locations for Eat Pray Love, the 2010 film starring Julia Roberts, and the beach’s own management still lists it among the cove’s claims to fame. Expect other fans taking the same photos; come before 9 am if you want the sand without a crowd.
Are there monkeys at Padang Padang Beach?
Yes. A troop of long-tailed macaques lives in the trees around the entrance, the staircase and the parking lot. They grab sunglasses, hats, food and loose bags, and rarely come into the crowd on the sand. Zip everything shut on the way down, do not feed them, and do not leave belongings on the rocks at the back of the beach.
How many steps are there to Padang Padang Beach?
About 120 steep, paved steps, ending in a narrow passage between a fallen boulder and the cliff. Going down takes a few minutes. The climb back is tiring in the heat, there is no handrail on much of the way, and the beach is not reachable with a stroller or wheelchair.
Is Padang Padang Beach worth visiting?
Yes, if you come early. The squeeze through the cliff, the calm cove and the chance to watch world-class surf make it one of Uluwatu’s best short visits. Arrive after 10 am in high season and you will share under 80 meters of sand with a crowd, so pick Thomas Beach next door if you want space.
When is the Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang?
The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang runs on one day in August, when the contest director calls it on for the best swell of the month. In 2026 the waiting period ran from 1 to 31 August, and Lucy Darragh and Rajo Saputra won the 23rd edition. Follow Rip Curl Indonesia’s announcements to catch contest day.
Can you take a boat from Padang Padang to Canggu?
Yes. GoBoat runs scheduled boat transfers from Padang Padang Beach to Nelayan Beach in Canggu in about 35 minutes, compared with 1.5 to 2.5 hours by road. It also stops at Jimbaran and Nuanu. Book online, check the weather, and remember you will carry any bags up or down the 120 steps.
Is Padang Padang good for sunset?
Not really. The cove faces north and the cliff blocks the sun before it sets, so the beach falls into shade in the late afternoon. For the sun dropping into the sea, drive 10 to 15 minutes to Uluwatu Temple or go to the cliff bars above Suluban, then come back to Padang Padang for a morning swim.
