Sekumpul Waterfall: A Practical Guide to Bali’s Seven-Fall Valley
Six or seven falls in one valley, a long staircase down and a guided river walk to Fiji.
By The Bali Guideline Editorial TeamUpdated 16 October 2026
Overview
Sekumpul Waterfall, before you go.
Sekumpul Waterfall is a cluster of six or seven falls in one jungle valley in Sawan, north Bali, about 28 km south-east of Lovina and 2 to 3 hours from Ubud. The viewpoint costs about IDR 20,000, and going down to the falls means a guided trek. It is worth the drive if your knees can take a few hundred steep steps.
Sekumpul means “a cluster” in Indonesian, and the name fits: six or seven waterfalls drop into one steep, fern-hung valley on the border of Sekumpul and Lemukih villages in Sawan district, about 20 km south-east of Singaraja. The main pair, the falls in most photos, pour side by side down the same cliff. They are usually given as about 80 m tall, though websites quote anything up to 130 m and no official measurement is published. One of the pair is fed by a river and runs brown after rain; the other comes from a spring and stays clear. A few hundred meters south-west, on the Lemukih side, three more falls drop side by side. Visitors call them Fiji, and Bali’s provincial tourism site lists them as Lemukih’s triple waterfall.
The village runs the site, and a visit now works through three tickets sold at the official counter beside the “Welcome to Sekumpul” sign. A viewpoint ticket, about IDR 20,000 for foreigners, takes you to the rim. The medium trek, IDR 125,000–150,000, goes down to the base of the main falls and the Hidden Waterfall; the long trek, IDR 200,000–250,000, adds Fiji. Both include a village guide, and past the viewpoint you are expected to have one (2025–2026 reports). Buleleng’s tourism chief said in 2023 that risky sites like this require a guide, but we found no published village rule, so treat the counter as the authority. Older guides, ours included, describe entry by donation with an optional guide; that is no longer how it works.
Know about the roadside posts. In November 2023 a TikTok video showed visitors stopped on the road in and asked for Rp 300,000 per Indonesian and Rp 600,000 per foreigner. On 16 November the Buleleng tourism office and Satpol PP, the regency’s public-order police, closed four unofficial counters in Pegayaman and Lemukih. Visitor reports from 2025 and 2026 say some posts are back, flagging cars with “registration” banners well before the village. You do not need to stop at them.
The real catches are physical. From the counter it is a hilly walk of 20 to 30 minutes through the village to the viewpoint, then a few hundred concrete steps down the valley wall and at least two stream crossings at the bottom. The climb back takes 30 to 40 minutes in thick, humid air, and it is the part people remember. This is not a visit for anyone with bad knees, limited mobility or small children. From the south it also means five to six hours in the car for the round trip, so many people sleep in Lovina or Munduk and come early.

What to see at Sekumpul Waterfall.
- 01
The viewpoint over the valley
The cheapest ticket takes you along a paved village path, 20 to 30 minutes from the counter, to a platform above the gorge. From here you see Sekumpul’s main pair and, on a clear day, the three Fiji falls beside them, the only way to take in the whole cluster at once. It suits anyone short of time or strength, and it is where people fly drones, since GPS signal fails at the bottom.
- 02
The stairs down the valley wall
Counts range from about 320 to 365 concrete steps, depending on the source and the route, and they are steep, uneven and wet with spray near the bottom. Warungs along the path sell cold drinks and snacks. Take the descent slowly, since it is hard on the knees, and save water for the climb back up: 30 to 40 minutes of steady stairs, and the hardest part of the day.
- 03
The base of Sekumpul’s main falls
At the bottom the spray reaches you long before the water does, and the wind off the falls soaks clothes in minutes. The two main falls land side by side; after rain one runs brown while the other stays clear. When the river is low you can wade or swim in the pool below. Keep away from the churn directly under the falls, and ask your guide before you get in.
- 04
The Hidden Waterfall
Included in both treks, the Hidden Waterfall sits in a narrow side gorge close to the main falls. Your guide leads you through palms and overhanging ferns, and the last stretch means wading up the stream. The pool at its base is big enough to paddle in, and it is usually quieter than the main falls, because viewpoint-only visitors never see it.
- 05
Fiji, the triple waterfall
The long trek adds the three side-by-side falls known as Fiji, on the Lemukih side of the same valley. Reports put the walk from the main falls at anything from 10 to 30 minutes, with more stream crossings and some unpaved, slippery ground. The falls are smaller than Sekumpul’s pair, but several small, clear pools at the base are often the best place in the valley for a swim.
- 06
Stream crossings on the valley floor
At the bottom of the stairs a narrow bridge crosses the river, and beyond it the paths to the falls cross at least two streams on foot. Water can reach above your knees, and it rises and runs faster after rain. Guides help on the slippery rocks. Wear shoes or sandals with straps and grip, never flip-flops, and keep phones and cameras in a dry bag.
- 07
Lemukih rice terraces and water-slide treks
Lemukih, the village on the far side of the valley, has terraced rice fields a few kilometers from Sekumpul and runs its own guided treks. One operator on Viator sells a five-hour trek through the terraces and forest that takes in a natural rock water slide, Sekumpul and Fiji, from about USD 25 a person in a July 2026 listing, with helmets and water shoes included. Book it ahead, not at a roadside post.
Seasons
Best time to visit Sekumpul Waterfall.
Arrive when the counter opens, about 8 am. Day trips from Ubud and the south reach Sekumpul from mid-morning after a drive of two and a half hours or more, and one January 2025 visitor found the crowds building by 9 am. An early start also gets you back up the stairs before the midday heat and before the afternoon storms that are common in the hills from December to March.
The falls run fullest from January to April, and March and April, at the tail of the rains, give strong flow with fewer storms. In the wet season, roughly November to March, the river-fed fall turns brown, the crossings get deeper and faster, and the stairs stay slick; one September 2026 guide warns of occasional access problems from flash flooding. No closure calendar is published, so check the forecast, ask at the counter and settle for the viewpoint if the river is high. From May to September the falls are smaller but the trails are drier.
Weekends and Indonesian holidays bring more domestic visitors. Nyepi closes all of Bali for 24 hours on Monday 8 March 2027, when nobody travels; on Galungan, 13 January and 11 August 2027, expect temple processions on the village roads.
Getting There
How to get to Sekumpul Waterfall.
| From | Time | How |
|---|---|---|
| Lovina (Kalibukbuk) | 45–60 min | About 28 km: east along the coast road through Singaraja, then inland through Menyali to the village. The last stretch is narrow and steep; go by car with driver or scooter. |
| Singaraja | 30–45 min | About 20 km: east on the Amlapura road, then south through Menyali. |
| Munduk | About 1 hour | About 30 km east via Wanagiri, then down the village road through Pegayaman. Banyumala and the twin-lakes viewpoint are on the way. |
| Ubud | 2–3 hours | About 65 km by car north via Bedugul, turning off the main road after Wanagiri. Leave by 6 am to reach the counter before the crowds; a driver costs about IDR 700,000–900,000 a day (2026 reports). |
| Seminyak or Canggu | 2.5–3.5 hours | About 72–81 km by car via Mengwi and Bedugul. Traffic through Denpasar decides the time; stop at Ulun Danu Beratan or Handara Gate on the way back. |
| Bali airport (DPS) | 2.5–3.5 hours | About 85 km via Denpasar and Bedugul. Too far to fit into an arrival day; visit from a night in Lovina or Munduk instead. |
Getting around Sekumpul Waterfall
Drive past any “registration” post on the way in and park at the official car park by the “Welcome to Sekumpul” sign, next to the ticket counter. An August 2025 report put parking at IDR 5,000 for a car and IDR 2,000 for a scooter. Scooters can carry on about 800 m down the lane to a last parking spot where the paved road ends and the footpath begins. If you are unsure which counter is the real one, ask your driver or homestay before you set off.
Your guide is assigned at the counter and walks with you the whole way, setting the pace and helping on the crossings. Agree before you pay which falls are included, especially whether the long trek’s Fiji leg is on. One 2026 guide notes that you pay the full guide fee even if your guide hangs back, so say so if you want help on the stairs or rocks.
Grab and Gojek are scarce in north Bali, and you will not find a ride back from the village. Keep your driver for the day or fix a pickup time. On a scooter, the lanes in from the main roads are narrow and steep; two people on a small bike will struggle, so rent at least 150cc.
Know Before You Go
Sekumpul Waterfall tips that save time and trouble.
- 01Pay only at the official counter by the “Welcome to Sekumpul” sign, and ask for a printed ticket.
- 02Bring cash in small notes for the ticket, parking and warungs.
- 03Wear shoes or strap sandals with grip that can get wet; flip-flops fail on the stairs and rocks.
- 04Wear swimwear under quick-dry clothes, and pack a towel and dry clothes; the spray soaks everyone.
- 05Carry phones in a dry bag; there is nowhere to leave things at the bottom.
- 06Bring a refillable bottle and turn down the plastic one included with the long trek.
- 07Fly drones from the viewpoint, not the base; one 2024 report says locals charge about IDR 400,000 to retrieve a crashed drone.
- 08Do not cross a stream that is brown and fast; wait, or turn back with your guide.
- 09Pack insect repellent; the valley is humid and mosquitoes are common.
- 10Allow at least 45 minutes for the climb back, and keep water for it.
FAQ
Sekumpul Waterfall questions, answered.
How much is the Sekumpul Waterfall entrance fee?
About IDR 20,000 for foreigners to walk to the viewpoint, IDR 125,000–150,000 for the medium trek to the base of Sekumpul and the Hidden Waterfall, and IDR 200,000–250,000 for the long trek that adds the Fiji falls, guide included (checked Oct 2026). Indonesians paid IDR 10,000 for the viewpoint in a 2025 report. Pay only at the official village counter.
Do you need a guide at Sekumpul Waterfall?
Yes, to go down to the falls. The village sells the medium and long treks only as guided packages, and 2025–2026 reports say visitors past the viewpoint are expected to have a guide. Buleleng’s tourism chief said in 2023 that risky sites require one, though no written village rule is published. The viewpoint-only ticket does not need a guide.
How many stairs are there at Sekumpul Waterfall?
Between about 320 and 365 concrete steps, depending on who counted and which route you take, after a hilly 20 to 30-minute walk through the village. From the car park to the base takes 30 to 45 minutes. The climb back takes 30 to 40 minutes and is the hardest part of the visit, so it does not suit people with knee problems or limited mobility.
What is the Fiji waterfall in Bali?
Fiji is a set of three falls that drop side by side into the same valley as Sekumpul, a few hundred meters south-west on the Lemukih side. Bali’s provincial tourism site lists it as Lemukih’s triple waterfall. You can see it from the Sekumpul viewpoint and reach it on the long guided trek, IDR 200,000–250,000 in 2026 reports.
How long does the Sekumpul Waterfall trek take?
About an hour for the viewpoint only, two to four hours for the medium trek to Sekumpul and the Hidden Waterfall, and four to five hours with Fiji. Add time for a swim and a drink at a warung on the way up. From Ubud or the south the drive adds five to six hours, so it fills a whole day.
Can you swim at Sekumpul Waterfall?
Yes, when the river is low. You can wade or swim in the pool below the main falls, though the spray and wind make it hard to stay long, and there are more pools at the Hidden Waterfall and Fiji. Keep away from the water directly under the falls, ask your guide first, and stay out when the water is brown and fast after rain.
How far is Sekumpul Waterfall from Ubud?
About 65 km, or 2 to 3 hours each way by car via Bedugul. Leave Ubud by 6 am to reach the counter before the crowds, and plan on a day of 10 hours or more. Drivers often add Ulun Danu Beratan, Handara Gate or Banyumala on the way back. If you can, spend a night in Lovina or Munduk instead.
Is Sekumpul Waterfall worth it?
Yes, if you can manage the stairs and the drive. Few places in Bali put this many tall falls in one valley, and the guided walk along the river floor is more of an outing than most waterfall stops. From Ubud or the south it costs a full day, so it makes the most sense from Lovina or Munduk, or combined with the Bedugul lakes.
Is Sekumpul Waterfall safe in the rainy season?
It can be, with care, but conditions change by the hour. From November to March the stairs and rocks are slick, the river-fed fall turns brown, and the stream crossings get deeper and faster; one 2026 guide notes occasional access problems from flash flooding. No closure calendar is published. Go in the morning, check the forecast, and turn back if the water is high.
What are the Sekumpul Waterfall opening hours?
About 8 am to 5 pm daily in most 2025–2026 reports, although there is no official listing and one 2025 article gives 8 am to 3 pm. Guides often wait at the car park from sunrise. Aim to start at 8 am, before day-trippers from the south arrive from mid-morning.
How tall is Sekumpul Waterfall?
About 80 m by the most common figure, though published heights run up to 130 m and no official measurement exists. The two main falls drop side by side down the same cliff, and the valley walls around them rise higher still. Height aside, it is the number of falls in one valley that sets Sekumpul apart.
How do you avoid the Sekumpul Waterfall scam?
Drive past anyone flagging you down for “registration” on the roads in, and pay only at the official counter beside the “Welcome to Sekumpul” sign in the village. In 2023 unofficial posts in Pegayaman and Lemukih charged foreigners Rp 600,000; officials closed four of them, but 2025–2026 reports say some are back. Ask for a printed ticket.
