Candidasa Travel Guide

A slow coastal base for exploring East Bali.

By The Bali Guideline Editorial TeamUpdated 15 October 2026

Area Brief

What Candidasa is really like.

Candidasa is a quiet seaside town on Bali’s east coast in Karangasem, about 65 km or 1.5 to 2.5 hours by car from the airport. It is the most central base for East Bali: Tenganan village is 4 km uphill, Padang Bai’s boats 13 km west, and Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung and Lempuyang within an hour. It suits culture-minded travelers, divers and couples, but the town beach is narrow.

Candidasa is a small resort town on the main coast road of Karangasem regency, built around a freshwater lotus lagoon. It sits 13 km east of the Padang Bai ferry port and about 65 km from the airport, and no other town puts more of East Bali within easy reach: the Bali Aga village of Tenganan is 4 km uphill, Virgin Beach about 8 km east, and Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung and Lempuyang are all within an hour by car.

The beach is the catch. In the 1970s and 1980s the offshore reef was mined for lime to build hotels, homes and restaurants, and with the reef gone the sand washed away. Groynes went up in the 1990s and seawalls now line much of the shore, leaving pockets of sand that vanish at high tide. Most guests swim in a hotel pool and drive to Virgin Beach, Blue Lagoon or Bias Tugel for the sea. Since 2017 the coast either side of town, with the islets of Gili Tepekong and Gili Mimpang, has been a marine protected area.

Read the full overview

The town is quiet and a little old-fashioned, which is its appeal: low hotels on the sea side of Jalan Raya Candidasa, warungs and dive shops on the other, and dinner instead of nightlife. But the road is also the east-coast highway, so trucks and tour buses pass through town; sea-side rooms, or Mendira to the west, are quieter.

Development pressure is real in Bugbug, to the east: villagers burned an unfinished resort near Pura Gumang in August 2023, and a 400-room resort was announced for Bukit Asah, the cliff above Virgin Beach, in September 2025.

Against its neighbors: Amed, 35 km north-east, has far better snorkeling off the beach but is farther from the airport; Padang Bai is a scruffier backpacker port with better beaches and the boats; Sidemen is green and inland. Pick Candidasa to see East Bali’s villages, palaces and temples from one base.

Candidasa is a good fit if…

  • Culture: Tenganan’s Bali Aga village is 4 km up the hill
  • Day trips to Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung and Lempuyang
  • Experienced divers: Gili Tepekong and Gili Mimpang sit just offshore
  • Couples and older travelers who want quiet nights by the sea
  • A stop before or after the Padang Bai boats to the Gilis

Skip it if…

  • You want a sandy swimming beach in town: seawalls replaced it
  • You want nightlife, beach clubs or shopping
  • You mind road noise: the main coast road runs through town
  • You won’t use a scooter or driver: the best sights are 4–45 km away

Neighborhoods

Which part of Candidasa to base yourself in.

Candidasa is not one place. Each pocket has its own pace, noise level and walking distance to the things you came for.

Gold labels are the neighborhoods below. Numbered pins match the things-to-do list; zoom out for the day trips.

  1. 01

Candidasa town, the lagoon and Mendira

Hotels line the sea side of Jalan Raya Candidasa, the main east-coast road, with warungs, dive shops, minimarts and ATMs across it. The lotus lagoon sits in the middle, with Pura Candidasa on the hill opposite and the Gedong Gandhi Ashram, founded in 1976, beside it. About 2.5 km west, lanes drop to Mendira, a banjar of Sengkidu, where small hotels sit on the water, quieter but with few places to eat.

Best for: First-timers in town; couples and long stays in Mendira

  2. 02

Bugbug, Bukit Asah and Virgin Beach

East of town the road climbs to Bugbug, one of Karangasem’s largest traditional villages, whose tourism board runs Bukit Asah, a clifftop with camping, and Virgin Beach, about 8 km from the lagoon. A few villas dot the hills, and resort plans keep resurfacing; one ended in a riot in 2023.

Best for: Beach days and clifftop views, with a scooter

  3. 03

    Padang Bai

Padang Bai, 13 km west, is a small port on a curved bay, with car ferries to Lombok and Nusa Penida and fast boats to the Gilis and Lembongan. Jalan Silayukti, on the beach, has dive shops, cafés and basic guesthouses, and Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugel are each about 1 km on foot. The port is a scrum of touts and porters.

Best for: Divers, snorkelers and anyone catching an early boat

  4. 04

    Tenganan and the hills

A side road climbs about 4 km north to Tenganan Pegringsingan, the walled Bali Aga village, with Tenganan Dauh Tukad nearby and the valley up to Kastala beyond. Rice terraces and forest cover the hills, linked by old footpaths. Places to stay are few, restaurants almost nonexistent, and Tenganan closes to visitors after dark.

Best for: Walkers who prefer rice fields to the sea

  5. 05

    Amlapura and Tirta Gangga

Amlapura, 14 km north-east, is the regency capital, with the royal palace, markets, banks and the regency hospital. Taman Ujung is about 5 km south-east of it on the coast, and Tirta Gangga about 7 km north, with budget guesthouses along the road and rice terraces all around. It is closer to Lempuyang and Amed, with very quiet evenings.

Best for: Early starts for Lempuyang and slow days at the water palaces

Things to do in Candidasa.

Ranked by how worth your time they are, with the practical detail you need before you go.

How we rank: how much each place adds to a first trip, weighed against cost, crowds and travel time from Candidasa. Prices and hours checked 15 October 2026. Editorial policy

  1. 01Culture

    Tenganan Pegringsingan

About 4 km north of Candidasa (10 min by car)

Bali’s best-known Bali Aga village keeps customs older than the Majapahit-era Hinduism of the rest of the island. A wall encloses rows of near-identical compounds either side of stone terraces climbing to Pura Puseh, and a kul-kul drum sounds 21 times each morning. Women weave geringsing, a double ikat made in only three places in the world, and villagers etch palm-leaf lontar drawings.

Tip: Entry by donation past the car park; about IDR 50,000 is typical (checked Oct 2026). Open roughly 7 am–6 pm.

  2. Woman on a stepping stone feeding koi in a Tirta Gangga pond, a tiered fountain behind02

    Culture

    Tirta Gangga water palace

Ababi, about 18 km north-east (30–40 min by car)

The last raja of Karangasem built this water garden in 1946, and Mount Agung’s 1963 eruption wrecked most of it, so much is rebuilt. You hop across octagonal stepping stones among koi and carved statues, and the springs supply holy water for ceremonies. Since 2025 the ticket includes the spring-fed swimming pool and a small museum, so bring swimwear.

Tip: IDR 90,000 for foreign adults since March 2025 (checked Oct 2026). Go early, before the tour buses.

  3. 03Beach

    Virgin Beach (Pantai Pasir Putih)

Between Bugbug and Perasi, about 8 km east (15–20 min)

East of Bugbug, a road drops to Pantai Pasir Putih, also called Perasi Beach: about half a kilometer of white sand between forested bluffs. It is no longer empty, with loungers, warungs grilling fish, massage sellers and day-trippers by midday. The water is calm enough to swim most days, with reef to snorkel when the sea is flat.

Tip: Locals collect a small entry fee on the access road. Go on a weekday morning.

  4. Woman in a yellow dress walking among the stone arches and columns of Taman Ujung04

    Culture

    Taman Ujung water palace

Tumbu, near Amlapura, about 12 km away (25–30 min)

The raja who later built Tirta Gangga began this seaside water palace in 1909 and finished it in the early 1920s, with Dutch and Chinese architects working beside Balinese builders. Three large pools, bridges, an island pavilion and the hilltop Bale Kapal fill about 10 hectares. Wrecked by the 1963 eruption and a later earthquake, it was restored in 1998–2001 and is far quieter than Tirta Gangga.

Tip: IDR 100,000 for foreign adults since January 2024 (checked Oct 2026). Best in late-afternoon light.

  5. Blue Lagoon beach at Padang Bai with turquoise water, moored boats and a blue umbrella05

    Beach

    Snorkeling Blue Lagoon, Padang Bai

East end of Padang Bai, about 1 km (15 min) on foot from the harbor

A path over the headland east of Padang Bai, past Pura Silayukti, linked to the 11th-century sage Mpu Kuturan, leads to Blue Lagoon, a small cove where the reef starts a few meters out. On calm mornings you float over coral with clownfish, parrotfish and angelfish, sometimes a turtle. Warungs rent gear. By midday snorkel boats from the south crowd in.

Tip: No entry fee, just IDR 2,000–5,000 parking (checked Oct 2026). Stay inside the bay; currents pick up at tide changes.

  6. Lempuyang’s white split gate framing Mount Agung above the clouds, a woman in red between06

    Temple

Lempuyang: the Gates of Heaven and the 1,700 steps

Mount Lempuyang, about 28 km north-east (45–60 min)

The split gate of Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang, framing Mount Agung, is Bali’s most queued-for photo: a numbered ticket, a wait of often 2 to 4 hours, 30 to 60 seconds at the gate, and a mirror held under the phone for the lake reflection. Beyond it, about 1,700 steps climb through forest to Pura Lempuyang Luhur, one of Bali’s nine directional temples, at about 1,060 m. Allow 3 to 4 hours up and back.

Tip: About IDR 100,000 for foreigners with a sarong, plus IDR 50,000 for the compulsory shuttle (checked Oct 2026); cash only, first shuttle about 5:30 am. Closed to tourists for about five days around Galungan, next 13 January 2027.

Seasons

Best time to visit Candidasa.

Candidasa shares the climate of Amlapura, 14 km away: about 1,540 mm of rain a year, from around 270 mm in January, the wettest month, to about 35 mm in September, the driest, with highs of 29–31°C. April to October brings calmer, clearer water for diving and clearer mornings at Lempuyang. November to March brings afternoon storms, and run-off clouds the sea after heavy rain.

Ceremonies shape the calendar. Tenganan’s pandan fights fall in June or July (9–11 June in 2026), and Bugbug holds its big Usaba at Pura Gumang every second year, around October. Lempuyang closes to tourists for about five days after Galungan, next on 13 January 2027, and Nyepi on 8 March 2027 shuts the island, Padang Bai’s boats included, for 24 hours. July, August and Christmas are busiest at the big sights.

Getting There

How to get to Candidasa.

Travel times to Candidasa
Bali airport (DPS)1.5–2.5 hrsAbout 65 km by car on the Ida Bagus Mantra coast road past Padang Bai; most people pre-book a driver.
Ubud1.5–2 hrsAbout 46 km by car via Klungkung, or Perama’s shared shuttle, which stops opposite Ashyana Hotel (checked Oct 2026).
Sanur1.25–1.75 hrsAbout 47 km by car along the east-coast road; Perama also runs from Kuta and Sanur.
Padang Bai20–30 minAbout 13 km by car. Grab and Gojek can drop off at the port but cannot pick up there.
Gili Islands or Lombok2–2.5 hrs from the GilisFast boat to Padang Bai (1.5–2 hrs) or car ferry from Lembar (4–5 hrs or more), then 20–30 min by car.
Amed45–60 minAbout 35 km by car via Culik, Tirta Gangga and Amlapura.
Nusa Penida1–1.5 hrsBoat from Sampalan to Kusamba, then about 20 km by car, or the car ferry to Padang Bai (about 90 min).

Getting around Candidasa

Central Candidasa is walkable along Jalan Raya Candidasa, and Mendira is about 2.5 km west, but the road carries fast trucks and buses, so walk facing traffic and carry a torch at night. Tenganan is a 3.5 km uphill walk or a 10-minute ride.

Beyond town you need wheels: a scooter from your hotel, or a car and driver by the day, the easiest way to loop Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga, Amlapura and Taman Ujung. Grab and Gojek are patchy this far east, bemos have become rare, and the steep, narrow roads to Lempuyang and Besakih are best avoided after dark.

Know Before You Go

Candidasa tips that save time and trouble.

  1. 01Bring a sarong and sash for Tenganan, Pura Candidasa, Goa Lawah and Silayukti; Lempuyang includes one with the ticket.
  2. 02Carry cash: Lempuyang, Bias Tugel, Tenganan’s donation booth and most warungs take nothing else.
  3. 03At Padang Bai, carry your own bags and buy boat tickets from your operator, not at the port gate, where porters and touts are pushy.
  4. 04Swim at Virgin Beach, Blue Lagoon or Bias Tugel rather than in town, and watch the tide: currents strengthen as it turns.
  5. 05Leave for Lempuyang by 5 am; by midday the wait for the gate photo can reach 3–4 hours.
  6. 06In Tenganan, ask before photographing people or entering a compound, and compare lontar prices at a few houses.
  7. 07Pay Bali’s IDR 150,000 tourist levy online through Love Bali before you travel.

FAQ

Candidasa questions, answered.

Is Candidasa worth visiting?

Yes, as a quiet, central base for East Bali: Tenganan is 4 km away, and Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung, Lempuyang and Padang Bai’s beaches are within an hour. It is not worth it for a beach holiday in town, where seawalls replaced the sand, or for nightlife.

Does Candidasa have a good beach?

Not in town. Coral mining in the 1970s and 1980s removed the reef that protected the shore, the sand washed away, and seawalls now leave small pockets that vanish at high tide. Go 8 km east to Virgin Beach, or 13 km west to Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugel at Padang Bai.

How far is Candidasa from Bali airport?

About 65 km, or 1.5 to 2.5 hours by car depending on traffic, along the coast road past Padang Bai. Most visitors pre-book a driver; Perama’s cheaper shared shuttle from Kuta, Sanur and Ubud stops opposite Ashyana Hotel.

Candidasa or Amed: where should you stay?

Candidasa for culture and day trips: it is closer to the airport, Tenganan, Padang Bai, Goa Lawah and Taman Ujung. Amed for snorkeling straight off the beach and the Liberty wreck at Tulamben. They are 35 km apart, 45 to 60 minutes by car, so many people split a week.

Candidasa or Padang Bai: which is better?

Padang Bai if you are catching an early boat or want to snorkel daily, since Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugel are a 15-minute walk; rooms there are mostly basic. Candidasa is quieter, with more comfortable hotels, and closer to Tenganan, Virgin Beach and the water palaces.

How many days do you need in Candidasa?

Three nights: a day for the town, Tenganan and Virgin Beach, a day in Padang Bai for diving or snorkeling, and a day inland for Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga, Amlapura and Taman Ujung. Add a night for the Kastala walk or a second dive day.

Can tourists visit Tenganan village?

Yes, in daylight, roughly 7 am to 6 pm. Entry is by donation at a booth past the car park, where about IDR 50,000 is typical. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and expect invitations into homes selling geringsing cloth and lontar drawings.

Is Virgin Beach worth visiting?

Yes, for a swim. It is the nearest white-sand beach to Candidasa, about 8 km east, with calm water most days, warungs and loungers. It is no longer untouched, with rows of sunbeds and day-trippers by midday, so go early on a weekday.

How do you get from Candidasa to the Gili Islands?

Drive 20 to 30 minutes to Padang Bai and take a fast boat, 1.5 to 2 hours. More than a dozen operators sail from about 8 am to 1:45 pm, for about IDR 200,000 to 685,000 one way (checked Oct 2026). The car ferry to Lembar on Lombok takes 4 to 5 hours or more.
