Handara Gate, Bali: Photo Fee, Queue and How to Fit It In

A golf resort’s split gate in the Bedugul hills, worth 20 minutes if you come early.

By The Bali Guideline Editorial TeamUpdated 16 October 2026

Overview

Handara Gate, before you go.

Handara Gate is the carved split gate at the entrance of Handara Golf & Resort in Pancasari, about 3 km north of Ulun Danu Beratan in the Bedugul highlands. Foreign visitors pay about IDR 50,000 for a turn of two to three minutes in front of it. Give it 20 minutes early in the morning on the way to the lake temple or Munduk; it does not justify a trip of its own.

Handara Gate is a candi bentar, the split gateway that stands at the entrance of Balinese temples and palaces, but this one leads to a golf course. Ibnu Sutowo, a former head of the state oil company Pertamina whom the resort calls the father of Indonesian golf, began building Bali Handara Country Club in 1974 and opened it in 1976, naming it after his youngest daughter. Peter Thomson, the five-time British Open champion, laid out its 18 holes with Michael Wolveridge and Ronald Fream inside the old Bratan caldera at 1,142 m. From 1986 to 2008 it ran as Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club, a joint venture with Japan’s Kosaido; today it is Handara Golf & Resort Bali, and 2026 is its 50th year.

The resort says the gate was planned with the original course and has stood there ever since. Its split form recalls the Balinese story in which Shiva divided Mount Meru in two, one half becoming Agung and the other Batur, and it has no roof so the line to the sky stays open. Flame-of-the-forest trees with orange-red flowers frame it and gave the resort its logo. There is no shrine behind it, no ceremony and no sarong rule: past the gate lie a driveway, the clubhouse and the fairways.

Instagram made it famous from about 2016: one figure in the middle of the drive, moss on the carved towers, mist on the forested slope behind. Photos used to be free. Now you buy a ticket at a kiosk by the parking area, about IDR 50,000 per foreign visitor and IDR 30,000 for Indonesians in 2024–2026 reports, take a queue number, and get two to three minutes at the gate when it is called. The resort says the money pays for upkeep, training for the staff who run the queue and conservation work in the Buleleng highlands.

Be clear about what you are paying for. The visit is the photo, and the photo depends on the weather: a thin morning mist gives the famous look, while thick cloud can blank out everything beyond the towers. After about 9 am, when day tours arrive from the south, the wait can reach an hour, and visitors report two hours or more on busy days. The water reflection in many shots is a mirror held under the phone. The ticket covers the gate only, not the golf course.

Handara vs Lempuyang: both are candi bentar gates made famous by the same kind of photo, but Lempuyang’s, in Karangasem, is a temple gate framing Mount Agung, with a sarong rule, a compulsory shuttle and waits of 2 to 4 hours for under a minute at the gate. Handara is cheaper, quicker and on the main road north, which is why it works as a short stop on a Bedugul or Munduk day.

What to See

What to see at Handara Gate.

  1. 01

The split gate and what it stands for

A candi bentar is one tower cut into two matching halves, with nothing between them. The resort explains the form through the story of Shiva splitting Mount Meru into Agung and Batur, and the open top through Rwa Bhineda, the balance of opposites. The same gate type marks temple entrances across Bali, Lempuyang’s included. Look at the carved tiers up close: the cool, wet air keeps moss growing on both towers.

  2. 02

    Your photo turn

Buy your ticket at the kiosk after the parking area, keep the number and wait to be called. You then get about two to three minutes on the driveway between the towers, enough for a few poses. Staff will take the photo for about IDR 10,000 extra, including the mirror trick that adds a reflection (March 2026 report). Plan your poses before your turn; the next person is already waiting.

  3. 03

    Mist on the crater slopes

The forested slope behind the gate is part of the old crater that holds the golf course, and the cloud on it makes or breaks the picture. Early mornings often bring a thin mist that softens the hill, as in the classic shots. By late morning cloud tends to build, and on bad days it sits at road level and hides everything beyond the towers. Look at the sky before you queue, not after you pay.

  4. 04

    Flame-of-the-forest trees

The trees framing the gate are African tulip trees, Spathodea campanulata, called flame of the forest here. Their orange-red, trumpet-shaped flowers stand above the leaves, and the resort says they bloom from late in the wet season until late in the dry season, roughly March to October. They inspired Handara’s logo and add the color to many gate photos.

  5. 05

Behind the gate: the golf course

Handara’s 18-hole, par-72 course runs to about 7,000 yards across 120 hectares inside the crater, with Kikuyu fairways, bentgrass greens and compulsory caddies. The 2026 rates are IDR 2,200,000 for 18 holes, IDR 1,200,000 for nine and IDR 1,100,000 for sunset golf from 2 pm. The thin air at 1,142 m adds distance to every shot, and an early tee time beats the afternoon showers.

  6. 06

    Behind the gate for non-golfers

You need a booking to go past the gate. The driving range sells 50 balls for IDR 50,000, the restored Japanese onsen that Kosaido built costs IDR 450,000 plus 21% tax and service for an hour, and afternoon tea runs daily from 2 to 6 pm. The resort also has 45 rooms and villas, the Orient Nine and Breeze Terrace restaurants, tennis and archery. Golf and range hours run 6:30 am to 5 pm, from 10 am on Mondays.

Seasons

Best time to visit Handara Gate.

Arrive between the 6 am opening and about 8:30 am, before the day tours from Ubud and the south coast. Guides report queues building after 9 am and peaking around noon, and the resort itself says early mornings bring shorter waits while midday and weekends mean longer ones. Late afternoon, 4 to 6 pm, is a second window, though cloud is more likely by then and one 2026 guide lists a 5 pm close.

Weather decides the photo more than the season. At 1,142 m the resort records 14 to 24°C year-round. April to October brings the clearest mornings; from November to March cloud and rain are more frequent, though showers usually hold off until the afternoon. In any month the morning is clearest and cloud tends to build by late morning. If it sits at road level when you arrive, see Ulun Danu Beratan first and come back.

Crowds follow the Indonesian calendar. Weekends, school holidays, Christmas, New Year and Eid bring families up from Denpasar, and on long weekends Ulun Danu Beratan alone passes 2,000 visitors a day. Weekdays outside holidays are calmest. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, closes the whole island for 24 hours on 8 March 2027.

Getting There

How to get to Handara Gate.

Travel times to Handara Gate
Ulun Danu Beratan (Candikuning)5–10 minAbout 3 km north of the temple on the main road to Singaraja, and about 4 km from Candikuning market. Most drivers combine the two in one stop.
Ubud1.5–2 hAbout 46 km by car with driver, climbing through Baturiti to Bedugul. Leave by 4:30 to 5 am to reach the gate near its 6 am opening.
Canggu1.5–2 hAbout 54 km by car with driver via Mengwi and Baturiti. A 4:30 am start gets you there before the queue builds.
Seminyak1.75–2.5 hAbout 57 km by car with driver; leave early to clear Denpasar and Mengwi traffic.
Bali airport (DPS)1.75–2.5 hAbout 65 km north by pre-booked car. Handara lies on the road to Munduk and Lovina, so stop on the way up rather than coming back for it.
Munduk25–35 minAbout 17 km east along the Wanagiri ridge road and down into Pancasari. From a Munduk base, a 6 am visit is easy.
Lovina1–1.5 hAbout 35 km south over the pass via Gitgit. The road climbs in tight bends, and fog is common near the top.

Getting around Handara Gate

Handara Gate stands about 100 m up the resort driveway from the main Denpasar–Singaraja road through Pancasari. Cars and scooters stop at the ticket kiosk beside the parking area; a March 2026 guide says parking is included in the ticket, while older reports mention a small fee, so carry a few IDR 5,000 notes. From there it is a short, flat walk to the gate with no stairs. Resort cars still use the driveway, so keep to the side while you wait.

Most visitors come with a car and driver hired for the day, which makes it easy to add Ulun Danu Beratan, the strawberry farms and the Wanagiri viewpoint. Ride-hailing is unreliable up here: a Grab or Gojek car from the south costs IDR 400,000 or more (2026 guide), a ride back down is much harder to find, and the apps do not work in Munduk. Perama’s shared shuttle links Bedugul with Ubud, Kuta and Sanur for IDR 150,000 per person, but you still need a lift to the gate.

On a scooter, the climb from Baturiti carries trucks and tour buses, and fog and cold rain cut visibility, so ride in daylight and pack a rain jacket. Walking from Candikuning means 3 to 4 km beside the same busy main road; from Hidden Strawberry Garden in Pancasari, the gate is under 1 km away.

Know Before You Go

Handara Gate tips that save time and trouble.

  1. 01Carry cash in small notes for the ticket, staff photos and parking; cards are not always accepted.
  2. 02Do the gate first at 6 am, then drive 3 km to Ulun Danu Beratan for its 7 am opening.
  3. 03Plan your poses before your number is called: you get only two to three minutes.
  4. 04The reflection in many photos is a mirror held under the phone; staff do it for about IDR 10,000.
  5. 05If the queue is long and your day is tight, skip it; a clear morning is better spent at the lake temple or on the Wanagiri ridge.
  6. 06Drones cost extra, IDR 100,000 to 200,000 in recent reports; ask at the kiosk before you fly.
  7. 07Pack a jacket: early mornings at 1,142 m can be around 14°C.
  8. 08Keep to the edge of the driveway while you wait; resort cars pass through the gate.
  9. 09Sleep in Pancasari, Candikuning, Munduk or at the resort to reach the gate before cars from the south arrive.

FAQ

Handara Gate questions, answered.

How much is the Handara Gate fee?

About IDR 50,000 per foreign visitor and IDR 30,000 for Indonesians, per person and in cash (checked Oct 2026). The ticket buys a numbered turn of about two to three minutes at the gate, not entry to the golf course. Staff photos cost about IDR 10,000 more, and drones and pre-wedding shoots are charged separately.

What are Handara Gate’s opening hours?

Daily from about 6 am to 7 pm (checked Oct 2026), the hours given in 2024–2026 guides and on its Trip.com listing. One February 2026 guide lists 8 am to 5 pm instead, so do not plan on a visit after 5 pm. The best window runs from opening to about 8:30 am.

How long is the queue at Handara Gate?

Short at opening and longer from about 9 am, when day tours arrive. 2026 guides report waits of 30 minutes to an hour by late morning and up to two or three hours on busy days, with noon the peak. Weekends and Indonesian holidays are worst. You wait for your number to be called, then get two to three minutes.

Is Handara Gate worth it?

Only as a short stop. If you are driving to Ulun Danu Beratan, Munduk or Lovina anyway and arrive before about 8:30 am, IDR 50,000 for the photo is fair. It is not worth a special trip from the south, a long midday queue or a cloudy day when the hills behind are hidden. Allow 15 to 30 minutes.

Handara Gate vs Lempuyang: which should I visit?

Pick by route. Lempuyang’s Gates of Heaven, a temple gate in Karangasem framing Mount Agung, costs about IDR 100,000 plus an IDR 50,000 shuttle, needs a sarong and often means a 2 to 4-hour wait for under a minute. Handara is a golf-resort gate in the central highlands, about IDR 50,000 with a shorter queue. They are about 125 km apart, so few people see both in one day.

Can you go inside Handara Golf & Resort?

Yes, with a booking. The photo ticket covers only the gate. Book a round of golf (IDR 2,200,000 for 18 holes in 2026), the driving range, afternoon tea, the onsen, a meal or a room, and you can go through. 2026 guides also list couple packages that add a resort tour or a pre-wedding shoot.

How do you get the classic Handara Gate photo?

Stand in the middle of the driveway between the towers, with the photographer low and centered on the road behind you. Staff will shoot for about IDR 10,000, including the mirror trick that adds a reflection. Come early for mist and soft light, wear a color that stands out against the green, and know your poses before your number is called.

Where is Handara Gate and how far is it from Ubud?

It stands at the entrance of Handara Golf & Resort on the main road through Pancasari, Buleleng, about 3 km north of Ulun Danu Beratan. From Ubud it is about 46 km, 1.5 to 2 hours by car; from Canggu or Seminyak 54 to 57 km and 1.5 to 2.5 hours; from the airport about 65 km.

Is Handara Gate a temple? Do I need a sarong?

No to both. It is built like a temple gate, a candi bentar, but it is the entrance to a golf resort, with no shrine behind it, so no dress code applies. Bring a warm layer instead, since early mornings at 1,142 m can be around 14°C. Lempuyang, by contrast, is a working temple and requires a sarong.

Will fog ruin the Handara Gate photo?

Sometimes. A thin morning mist on the hills gives the classic shot its mood, but thick cloud can hide everything beyond the towers, and it often builds by late morning. April to October mornings are the most reliable. Check the sky before you buy a ticket; if cloud is down to the road, come back later or skip it.

Can you fly a drone at Handara Gate?

Yes, for an extra fee: IDR 200,000 in a March 2026 guide and IDR 100,000 in a 2024 report. Ask at the ticket kiosk before you launch, keep clear of the queue and resort traffic, and remember the gate stands on private resort land.

How do I fit Handara Gate into a Bedugul day?

Put it first. Leave Ubud or Canggu by about 4:30 to 5 am, reach the gate near its 6 am opening, then drive 3 km to Ulun Danu Beratan for 7 am. Add the botanic garden, which closes at 4 pm, and Candikuning market, pick strawberries in Pancasari after lunch, then head home or continue over the Wanagiri ridge to Munduk.
