One of Ubud’s favorite pastimes? Breakfast. While the town’s obsession with typical tourist brunch fare is never-ending, here is a new morning ritual we think is worth bookmarking: Heritage Breakfast at Liap Liap. Located right on the pulse of Monkey Forest Street, this contemporary Indonesian destination is a sibling to the award-winning Bisma Eight Hotel. The restaurant is now pivoting from its famous wood-fired dinners to celebrate the most comforting morning staple of the archipelago: Bubur (porridge).
If you are familiar with the area, you will know Liap Liap sits smack in the middle of the cultural hustle of Ubud. It is located just steps away from the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Step inside between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM and the space transforms into a mindful sanctuary rooted in nostalgia. This is not your typical hotel buffet. It is a curated journey through the islands of Indonesia, spotlighting humble dishes that have fed generations from Java to Sulawesi.

The menu features five distinct bowls, and each is a story of place. There is the savory Bubur Jakarta and the vegetable-packed Bubur Tinutuan, which is known as the rainbow in a bowl of Manado. You can also find the nutrient-rich Bubur Daun Kelor for those seeking a traditional wellness boost. For a taste of the local soil, the Bubur Beras Merah uses red rice from the agricultural heartland of Tabanan, Bali.
Dining here is a tactile experience. Each bowl is elevated with a selection of traditional toppings, including quail egg skewers, chicken liver satays, and crispy tahu (tofu). To dial up the heat, guests can personalize their meal with a trio of house-made sambals: the smoky Sambal Roa, the aromatic Sambal Embe, or the classic Sambal Terasi.

To wash it all down, Liap Liap has curated a selection of jamu and herbal infusions. You will find the wellness-focused Jamu Kunyit Asam, the spiced Wedang Jahe, and the creamy, ginger-infused Bajigur.
Heritage Breakfast at Liap Liap is more than just a meal. It is a mission to keep Indonesian culinary traditions alive while making them accessible and exciting for the modern traveler. With its sophisticated atmosphere and soulful menu, it is quickly becoming one of the most talked about new breakfast spots in Ubud.
